Clean Water for Haitian Orphanage
I see that it is necessary for a Peace Corp Volunteer to nominate a Project for consideration under the Appropriate Projects initiative. I wonder if anyone could help me locate any such volunteers who might be willing to take on a project at an Orphanage we support in Quanaminthe, just over the border from the Dominican Republic.
I am an English woman who has been living and working in the Dominican Republic for the past 10 years. I am helping a ministry, Saca la Red y Echala de Nuevo, fundraise for an orphanage, MESSEF, in Quanaminthe in Haïti. This orphanage had substantial needs before the earthquake and, although not affected directly by the recent disaster, has been under greater pressure since then. There are currently around 50 children housed there and until recently they had no running water.
We have so far sunk a well and installed a pump but the water is not fit for drinking and we are working towards installing a filter system. We have raised some funds but nowhere near enough to cover the costs we have been quoted by a local company in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
If anyone could come up with any suggestions for the best way forward I, and the children of MESSEF would be extremely grateful.
